FAQ

Food for Our Planet™ is EARTHDAY.ORG’s multi-year global theme and initiative focused on the connection between food, human health, and the planet, while addressing the environmental, health, economic, and community dimensions of food systems. Transforming how the world grows, produces, and consumes food is one of our greatest opportunities to protect human health, restore soils, and build a healthier, more resilient future for people and the planet.

Earth Day 2027 is Thursday, April 22, 2027, and Food for Our Planet™ builds toward it throughout Earth Month. Details on events and ways to participate will be released as the campaign develops.

Food is essential to every person and community, but today’s food systems are contributing to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Diet-related disease is rising, billions of people cannot afford a healthy diet, and food production places enormous pressures on land, water, soils, biodiversity and climate. At the same time, food waste, harmful chemicals, plastics and highly processed foods create additional risks for people and the planet.

Food for Our Planet™ is built around three interconnected pillars. Healthy People focuses on food transparency, nutrition, plant-based diets and the impacts of harmful chemicals, plastics and ultra-processed foods. Healthy Soils centers on regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and resilient food production. Healthy Futures addresses food waste, circular food systems, sustainable consumption, and empowering the next generation of food leaders. Explore each pillar.

Earth Day was born on April 22, 1970 — a date deliberately chosen by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and young activist Denis Hayes to fall between Spring Break and Final Exams, maximizing student participation in what began as a national environmental teach-in. That single day drew 20 million Americans into the streets and sparked the modern environmental movement. Today, Denis Hayes serves as Board Chair Emeritus of EARTHDAY.ORG, the non-profit organization that grew out of that very first Earth Day and now mobilizes one billion people in 193 countries every year.
